The videos from dress rehearsal for my kids' dance recital. My husband has the videos from the actual performance, hopefully he posts them soon...When finding a Mosley in a dance video, look in the back. Tall kids are always in the back. That's why we love solos.
Ava's Egyptian ballet routine. Zach says, "Are they supposed to be the Israelites??"
Ava's Hairspray jazz routine. After which Colson says to her, because 8 months of hip hop has apparently made him a jazz expert, "Ava, I saw one little problem in your jazz routine. You weren't shimmying as much as the other girls. I could tell because the strings on your dress weren't moving as much as theirs". But those of you who know my introverted Ava know that what she's doing in this video is akin to her having an epileptic seizure.
And Colson's Michael Jackson tribute hip hop routine. He comes in from the right side in the beginning, he's the one without the glove. Because he lost his. Shocking. Ava was irritated because this routine got all the applause. I had to explain to her that when 37 out of 38 routines are all girls, that one routine with all boys is going to get the crowd going. Plus any routine featuring Michael Jackson moves is going to get applause. I said even if all the boys fell on their faces the audience would applaud loudest for them. It's like a routine filled with babies and puppies.
We asked Zachary if he wanted to be in the dance recital next year. He said, "I think I'm more of a sports guy than a dance guy...."
As an INTJ female (for those into Myers-Briggs and the like), I am a hard person to know, and an even harder person to love. I wonder if someday my children will want to know what really went on in my brain. I shall leave them this gift. Well, maybe not so much a "gift" as an extremely uncomfortable last will and testament.

New Showdance Time!
Big day! Headed up to Manhattan to get our new 2012 Showdance choreography from the one, the only, Ronnie Debenedetta.
Who is Ronnie Debenedetta, you ask? *Gasp*! Shut your mouth. Only a gazillion time UCWDC Masters World Champion and US Open West Coast Swing Champion.
He's going to choreograph a west coast swing for us, to Jamie Lono's acoustic version of Folsom Prison Blues, from The Voice.

The Big Winners!
Examples of my award winning students from the MidAtlantic Dance Classic! Each of my students danced 7 or 8 dances with me, and they both won first place in their divisions. Here are two of Paul Grande's dances, his two step and his east coast swing:
And here are two of Stan Wojciechowski's dances, his cha cha and his west coast swing:

Musical Apples And Trees
Not that there was ever any doubt with my brother Andrew as his father, but my nephew @LittleRFL is going to grow up with the most eclectic taste in music. Here is his jamming out to the cool UK band, The Ting Tings...
...and here he is enjoying breakfast to the sounds of Lawrence Welk, understandably distracted from his Chex by the beautiful waltz.
He'll never have anything in common with his peers musically, but I'm betting the ladies will always swoon over his progressive, alternative coolness. Like father, like son..........

This Is Your Birthday Song...
At midnight on my birthday, I was in a rehearsal room at the UCWDC World Championships in Orlando. Richard, John and Antoinette stopped dancing and burst out in song. It was something else. Then, Antoinette sang a little solo birthday song to me, the cutest song I ever heard. I tried to get her to sing it again on camera, but she wouldn't. I tried so hard, but that girl is STUH-BERN!!!!! She was awfully cute while refusing, though...

King Solomon's Waltz
Solomon, who competes in the ProPro division with me, took first place in every dance in Birmingham this past weekend. My favorite of our dances by far was our waltz.

Dancin' In Dixie, & How-Tos For The Weekend
Headed to Birmingham today for the Christmas In Dixie event. Haven't been to this event since I lived in Nashville many years ago. Should be a fun event, lots of my favorite dancers will be in attendance.
In other news, this video is for Eric, a little reminder of how to do Ava's hair this weekend.
And, in case anyone needs this information, how to work Zachary's nebulizer to do his breathing treatments.

Hippies At The Shore
Showdance from Panama City. I just can't seem to get the speed right. At this speed it seems snoozy. We practice it to a speed that seems great, but then when we dance it in a show, it seems slow again. It's so hard to account for adrenalin, I wish I could come up with an equation.

Waltzin' At The Beach
Classic Waltz from Panama City. It's definitely getting better. Not quite where I want it to be yet, but closer....thanks to Stan for taping this!

Jiffy Two Step
Pro-Am is a dance division I've explained briefly in the past. But there is a subset of Pro-Am that I didn't mention, and that is Pro-Pro. Pro-Pro is a division for a professional dancer who doesn't have a partner but still wants to compete. That dancer can ask a higher ranking dancer to compete with them in the Pro-Pro division. Only the lower ranking Pro is judged, just like the Ams in Pro-Am. This division lets professionals compete against each other.
Solomon, my partner Richard's boyfriend, asked me earlier in the year if I would take him on as a Pro-Pro "student". I love dancing with Solomon, so of course I agreed. Our first time out we just social danced most of our dances, we didn't have time to put routines together. We danced an old Cha Cha and Waltz routine of Solomon's, and I threw together two phrases of Two Step.
In Boston, I wanted him to have a full two-step routine, so I was determined to choreograph one. The trouble is, we only had 2 hours on Friday afternoon, and we had to compete Friday night at 6. Pressure is the best motivator, so here is the Two Step that I choreographed for Solomon in one hour. We had someone videotape us practicing it so we wouldn't forget it by 6pm that night...!

Not only didn't Solomon forget it, he earned a Gold With Honors with it, and took 1st place in this dance that night.

Lifecycle Of A Showdance, Part 2
I promised to show you how a Showdance develops throughout the dance season, so here is our Showdance from Boston. When you watch the previous version next to this one, you should see many changes, from costumes to specific movements to quality of dancing.

New England Dance Festival Update
What a successful weekend! Richard and I won Two-Step again, proving that wasn't a fluke last time. (And one judge gave us first in waltz against Clive and Emily, whaaaaat???!!!!?)
My student Stan competed in Male Diamond Newcomer and took 1st overall. He also competed in Male Open Newcomer and took 2nd, just narrowly missing 1st. He took 3rd in West Coast Swing Jack and Jill, and took 2nd in Two-Step Jack and Jill.
Richard's student Lee took 2nd overall in Female Diamond Intermediate, and his student Barb got Gold With Honors in all 3 of her dances in Syllabus B. Sasha and I successfully got through a full Showcase Masters program, and took 1st overall (we were the only ones dancing a full program). Solomon took 2nd overall in Male Pro-Pro, winning Cha Cha, Two Step, and West Coast. (no "student" of mine will ever lose twostep!!!)
I completed my 2nd apprentice judging panel, only one more to do before I am a fully certified judge!
We got to eat at some great restaurants in Boston, went to John and Dee Soares fun Hallway Party, caught up with some dance friends, all in all a great weekend. Now on to Chicago this coming weekend!

The Apprentice
Big Apple dance competition this weekend. I get to apprentice judge at this event. I have visions of making broomsticks carry buckets around the dance floor.

Drum Roll, Please!
My new favorite west coast swing routine. Benji and Melissa have never competed together to my knowledge, but at John Lindo's event Libery Swing, last weekend, they decided to throw a routine together. And by "throw", I mean Benji choreographed it in exactly one hour, and then they rehearsed it for exactly one hour. This was the final result, a first place routine.

Keep It Together, Shins
Off to the Orange Blossom Dance Festival in Orlando.
They're holding a cool new event this year, the Pro-Am Jack and Jill. Spectators will get to, for $15, come on stage and pull one of our names out of a hat and dance west coast swing and two-step with us Pros. They'll be judged against all of the other amateurs who participate, and the winner will win a cash prize.
I'll be working my rear off at this event. Solomon (my dance partner Richard's boyfriend) is competing in Pro-Pro with me. Pro-Pro is similar to Pro-Am, but if you are a dance professional already, you can dance with a higher ranked Pro and compete against other dance pros. Since I am now a Master level dancer and Solomon ended his country dance career in Division 1, I'm technically ranked higher, so he can compete as the lower Pro in this division. I'm smelling a World Championship for him this year in this division.
I have two Pro-Am students I'm competing with, Paul and Stan. Paul is dancing 4 dances, Stan is dancing 6.
Then I'm competing in Masters Classic and Masters Showcase with Richard and Sasha. I won't be doing line dance at this event, since I need to put together a full line dance program and I don't have that ready yet.
Busy weekend. Hoping for a little downtime so I can get to the pool at least once.

I'll Stay An Ugly Duckling
I haven't posted all week because I've been in a state of extreme anxiousness. I've had a lot of pain in my lower legs for the past 2 weeks, and wondered if I had fractured my bones. I went to see an orthopaedic guy on Tuesday, and he said I had "for sure" fractured both tibiae. He ordered a bone scan just to see how badly they were fractured. I had the bone scan on Wednesday, and I went back to the doctor on Thursday. I saw a different doctor in the practice, he read my bone scans and said that although they showed a lot of activity in my tibia, he didn't think there were any fractures.
I've never been so happy in my life. I actually teared up and wanted to hug the guy. I didn't, because I'm still an introvert. And how could he know that I've had this scene from Black Swan playing over and over in my head every time I've taken a step in the past 4 days:
But hurray, my legs aren't fractured! I've got shin splints, but no fractures yet. So as long as I take it easy and pay attention to my pain, my legs will heal and I won't fracture my bones. All of my dancing guys are on strict orders to take it easy on me, monitor my pain and make me stop and take a break if my legs hurt. They know they can't count on me to monitor my own pain, I danced a full program with an oozing staph infection in my foot once....
